On Tuesday the 4^th of June St Joseph’s at Kingswood decided to challenge our school community with a Zero Waste Day. As a school community we feel this is an area where little changes can make a big difference to our planet. We started by having meetings with Mr Deverson to discuss how we could come up with some awesome activities. We designed and made out own posters to put up around the school. It was great to see so many children in the school had lunches with no packaging and if packaging needing removing before going into the lunch boxes it also gave families a chance to think about how they manage their own rubbish at home. We have to say the yard looked absolutely amazing after recess and lunch with not a wrapper to be seen. The Seniors took this as an opportunity to lead working with Mrs Lambourne who has experience in soap making, to make over 200 handmade soaps for families and staff to take home. This will mean 200 less plastic bottles of body or hand wash are entering our landfill. Also, the Year 6 class worked with student teacher Miss Barr and Mrs Lambourne to make all their own recess from scratch and this included damper with butter and jam and homemade muesli bars. They were delicious and so easy. Overall, we thought the day went really well and are so proud of our school for leading the way to saving our planet.
