FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Families,
The smell of coffee and croissants, seeing smiling children, proud dads, grandparents, and special friends gathered on The Green was such a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all that Fathers give to us throughout the year. Thank you to all those who were able to join with us, I pass on our best wishes to all on Father’s Day this weekend.
Learning Talks
Many of you are beginning to book in for the Learning Talk starting on Monday 8th September. Students and staff are working together to reflect on progress and goals. This is a great opportunity to review and plan your child’s next learning goals.
Students will share a snapshot of their work with their parents/carers and teacher/s and will invite you to give feedback and ask questions to set new learning goals. We encourage you to participate by following your child’s lead and perhaps preparing a question or two in advance. A reminder that if there is anything you wish to discuss with the teacher only, just let the teacher know you need some time for a question so it can be allocated.
This is only our second time at this process, and after conversations with some senior students in term 2, they really found the process beneficial. Our aim is to increase student confidence in talking about themselves as learners and in turn, knowing what they can do to improve with parent support and celebrate areas of achievement and strength.
As a Visible Learning School, we are guided by the findings of John Hattie’s (2009) research on effect size (influence). Noting any effect above 0.01 has a positive effect, but an effect that makes a year’s progress needs to be over 0.40.
- Relationship between student achievement and parental participation 0.56
- Supportive parenting 0.43
- Homework supervision 0.19
- Communication between school and teachers 0.14
- Reading 0.40
- Parent expectations 0.58
We aim to provide an opportunity for parents and students to talk about learning and achievement and importantly to enable the child to hear parent expectations.
I hope you enjoy, and gain form the Learning Talks.
Welcome Spring!
Enjoy the warmer weather and Happy Father’s Day!
With gratitude,
Jodie Higgins
