Dear Families,
The smell of coffee and croissants, seeing smiling children, proud dads, grandparents, and special friends gathered on The Green was such a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all that Fathers give to us throughout the year. Thank you to all those who were able to join with us, I pass on our best wishes to all on Father’s Day this weekend.
Learning Talks
Many of you are beginning to book in for the Learning Talk starting on Monday 8th September. Students and staff are working together to reflect on progress and goals. This is a great opportunity to review and plan your child’s next learning goals.
Students will share a snapshot of their work with their parents/carers and teacher/s and will invite you to give feedback and ask questions to set new learning goals. We encourage you to participate by following your child’s lead and perhaps preparing a question or two in advance. A reminder that if there is anything you wish to discuss with the teacher only, just let the teacher know you need some time for a question so it can be allocated.
This is only our second time at this process, and after conversations with some senior students in term 2, they really found the process beneficial. Our aim is to increase student confidence in talking about themselves as learners and in turn, knowing what they can do to improve with parent support and celebrate areas of achievement and strength.
As a Visible Learning School, we are guided by the findings of John Hattie’s (2009) research on effect size (influence). Noting any effect above 0.01 has a positive effect, but an effect that makes a year’s progress needs to be over 0.40.
- Relationship between student achievement and parental participation 0.56
- Supportive parenting 0.43
- Homework supervision 0.19
- Communication between school and teachers 0.14
- Reading 0.40
- Parent expectations 0.58
We aim to provide an opportunity for parents and students to talk about learning and achievement and importantly to enable the child to hear parent expectations.
I hope you enjoy, and gain form the Learning Talks.
Welcome Spring!
Enjoy the warmer weather and Happy Father’s Day!
With gratitude,
Jodie Higgins
Principal
Dear Families,
I am writing this article just before I leave with a group of Spirit Team Leaders to take our second run of donations to St Vinnies in Christies Beach. I am always amazed at how big the St Joseph’s heart is! We are going to struggle to fit all your donations into one car!

SEASON OF CREATION
Today marks the opening of the Season of Creation in the Catholic Church. This year’s theme is: Let Justice and Peace Flow. Prophet Amos cries out: “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5: 24) and so we are called to join the river of justice and peace, to take up climate and ecological justice, and to speak out with and for communities most impacted by climate injustice and the loss of biodiversity.
As the people of God, we must work together on behalf of all Creation, as part of that mighty river of peace and justice.
Prophet Isaiah proclaims: “Listen carefully, I am about to do a new thing, now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it? I will even put a road in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.” (Isaiah 43: 19) Biodiversity is being lost at a rate not seen since the last mass extinction. The futures of young people are threatened by the cascading impacts of the loss of biodiversity and a changing climate. The urgency grows and we must make visible peace with Earth and on Earth, at the same time that justice calls us to repentance and a change of attitude and actions. As we join the river of justice and peace with others then hope is created instead of despair.
Let us offer this prayer:
A Prayer for Our Earth
All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth,
so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts
of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united
with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle
for justice, love and peace.
AMEN
Blessings,
Christine Farrugia | APRIM

Wow! What an exciting start to Term 3! It has been so wonderful to meet all of the students at St Joseph’s Kingswood! What a talented school we have!
Each of our year levels have been trying something different! Reception to Year 2 students have been learning how to keep a steady beat using our bodies as percussion instruments! We have also learnt how to read digital music! Using Chroma notes instruments, students have been successful in learning three new songs on Boomwhackers and Handbells.
Our Year 3/4 students have played Boomwhackers and Handbells but have quickly advanced onto the Ukulele’s. So far, we have learnt 4 chords on the Ukulele and are now rehearsing a class song.
Our Senior Students have had a focus on learning how to play as an ensemble. Using Orff instruments: Glockenspiel, Xylophones, Boomwhackers and Dejmbe’s we have been learning a song called ‘Going Home’. In this piece, students have learnt to read music, play in sections, and developed a strong understanding of Musical Form. It is wonderful to see them progressing so well.
Instrumental Lessons!
Instrumental lessons at St Joseph’s continue to be a popular choice amongst the students. I am very happy to say that we have a Singing Teacher starting on Monday, Melissa Agnello. We are really looking forward to our students continue to develop their skills. We also have a new Trumpet Teacher starting very soon!
If you are interested in learning an instrument, please complete an application via SZapp

Vacation Care for Term 3 is filling fast so don’t forget to book on Fully Booked as soon as possible! The children have a lot of interesting excursions and activities to look forward to. Please click here to view the Vacation Care Program.
It is compulsory to have a wide brimmed hat in OSHC and Vacation Care. We ask that all parents bring a named hat to be left in OSHC.
Just a few reminders:
- All OSHC and Vacation Care bookings are to be made via the Fully Booked app.
- If your child is unwell or their booking needs to be changed, please do so via the app also.
- We require parents to sign children into before school care and out of after school care. Please do this through the iPad in the Hall and let an OSHC Educator know that you are taking your child.
If you are interested in becoming a part of the OSHC Parent Committee, please email myself at vwilson@stjk.catholic.edu.au. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 15th November (Term 4, Week 5) between 5 and 6pm.
Finally, Friday 3rd November (Term 4, Week 3), is a Pupil Free Day. There will be no OSHC on this day. Thank you for your understanding.

What a wonderful way to celebrate the Father's in our lives! We hope everyone enjoyed the coffee, croissants, and chats this morning. Thank you to Mrs Webb and the Reception teachers and students for putting together the beautiful performance from some of our youngest St Joseph's children.
A massive thank you to Katina and the staff that helped to put everything together.
To all of the Father's within our school community, Happy Father's Day. Thank you for all that you do for us and for how hard you work!
