Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to term 3. I trust you all had a relaxing holiday period. The children have returned to school in a settled manner and semester two work has commenced apace. Teachers have developed semester 2 learning goals for your children and there are many interesting and exciting learning opportunities ahead. School sports have commenced for term 3, which has been a welcome return to a more normal rhythm, and last Thursday we attended our first SACPSSA Carnival-Netball-for some time.
Building program imminent….Playground nearly finished!
Our much awaited playground development is entering its final stage, and over the next 2 weeks we anticipate a flurry of activity as the larger elements of the playground are established. The children have been very excited to watch the growth of the two areas and are very much looking forward to when they can play! I want to acknowledge the efforts of our Parents & Friends past and present, who have been an integral part of bringing this project to life – through fundraising, concept planning and creating the imperative! Thank you!
As that development comes to fruition, I am delighted to announce that the first stage of our Master Plan will commence from August 4. This is an exciting renovation of our existing school facilities and will include a brand new administration centre, redeveloped class spaces, a brand new Resource centre and other multi-purpose learning spaces as well as a rejuvenated courtyard space. Please refer to the communique sent earlier this week via szapp, outlining how the program will unfold, and some temporary arrangements for terms 3 and 4.
Rich opportunities during term 3
This term will see many opportunities that were previously put on hold, come to life. These include, as previously mentioned, sporting activities-games, carnivals etc, local excursions such as our walks to the Mitcham Library, overnight excursions such as the year 4 ‘Zoo Snooze’ and the continued preparations for our school Musical…with a difference! There will be more information about that in coming weeks. The Catholic Schools Music Festival, too, will be presented during term 3, through the provision of a virtual performance. All of the children will look forward to our annual disco later in the term, and our House leaders are getting ready to host ‘House days’ again, as well as busily preparing for our annual end of term sports carnival. It was exciting to once again offer Playgroup in the first week back! This will continue now, throughout the year.
Welcome…. And welcome back!
Last Wednesday, we welcomed our new JOEYS, to our school. This intrepid group of children are beginning their journey towards commencing school in 2021. They will be visiting every Wednesday, and spending time with Mrs Paula Thomson, getting used to being here at school, playing, having fun and making new friends. When I visited the ‘class’ during the morning, they had all settled in remarkably well.
This term, we have welcomed back our APRIM Mrs Christine Farrugia from parenting leave. In doing so, we also acknowledge and thank Mrs Emma Begg who admirably performed the role for the first two terms of 2020. Emma has returned full time to the classroom, while Mrs Kate Meuller has taken on some other important duties in the school, including playgroup!
COVID-19
It was fantastic to be able to welcome families back into the school yard this term. I would like to thank all parents and caregivers for supporting our COVID safe plan, and for keeping in line with all social distancing and hygiene practices. I also appreciate those families who have recognised the value of independence amongst the children by continuing to support the children to come into school independently. The situation with COVID-19 is of continuing concern, around Australia, and while SA is currently managing very well, the possibility of restrictions being reintroduced remains a moving target. At St. Joseph’s Kingswood we remain vigilant, and have prepared for the possibility of further restrictions that could lead to remote learning. We hope and pray that this doesn’t happen!
Catholic Schools Week- 10th-17th August
Across SA, all Catholic Schools will celebrate the contribution of Catholic Education. There will be a strong media campaign, which includes an insert you may have seen in Saturday’s Advertiser, as well as Open Schools, and other events. We will kick off the week early, this Friday by celebrating the Feast of St. Mary of the Cross Mackillop, who in so many ways IS the story of Catholic Education in this state. Our children will attend Mass, followed by the first of our ‘House Days’ for 2020- hosted by….MacKillop House (Blue.) A gold coin donation from the children will be donated towards a Josephite charity.
Have a great week everyone,
God Bless,
Phil Schultz.

Hello everyone and welcome to Term 3.
I hope you all had a great break and got to enjoy the few days of sunshine in the second week of the holidays. We went away to Melrose and had a wonderful time riding our bikes and roasting marshmallows by the fire.
This term brings with it some excitement and caution. It’s exciting that we will shortly have a new playground and the updating of some of our classrooms and administration building will commence soon. We have also been able to relax some restrictions too as South Australia. But as we have seen in other states, we still need to remain cautious so that this continues. It would not be good if we had to put strict restrictions back in place. We are still working hard to make sure we meet all of the requirements suggested by our government and by Catholic Education SA. Thanks for being patient and understanding during this difficult time.
Last week I was fortunate enough to go to the netball carnival held at ETSA park. I was the coach of the Year 4 girls team. They did a fantastic job and represented their school with pride as did all of the other students who attended. It was great to see that all of the students were not boastful when winning and gracious in defeat. We also had great weather too.
I hope you have a great couple of weeks. The next time I write our school look very different. Hopefully our playground is finished and the children are enjoying playing on there and our new admin building will under way. My new office is in the old JOEYS/Playgroup room with lots of other members of the school admin and leadership team.
Take care,
Jamie
Welcome to term 3. As some of you may remember, I left in term 2 last year to be on maternity leave. During that time, I gave birth to my second daughter, Grace, who is now over a year old! It is great to be back in this community and I am looking forward to crossing paths with all of you soon.
We have been busily planning this term’s religious events and the first event coming up is the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop on the 8th August (celebrated at the school on Friday 7th August). We are so blessed as a school community to have such a close connection to the life and work of Mary MacKillop. This feast day is very dear to us and we are working hard to organize a day that conveys the importance of this celebration. To this end, we are making Friday the 7th August a MacKillop House Day, full of activities revolving around Saint Mary MacKillop.
I would also like to introduce to the community, the New Archbishop of Adelaide: Patrick O’Regan.
Patrick Michael O’Regan was born in Perthville NSW, a small rural village 10km south of Bathurst, on Wednesday October 8, 1958.
His parents, the late Colin Michael O’Regan and the late Alice Daphne O’Regan (nee Dulhunty) raised four children, Stephen, Laurence, Patrick and Louise.
He was educated at St Joseph’s Primary, Perthville by the Sisters of St Joseph, and at St Stanislaus Secondary College, Bathurst, by the Vincentian Order. He studied for the priesthood at St Columba College, Springwood, and St Patrick’s College, Manly, before being ordained a priest for Bathurst Diocese in 1983. He served as assistant priest at Lithgow, Cowra, Orange and Bathurst before undertaking higher studies in France in 1994-95.
Fr O’Regan returned to Orange as assistant priest for three years, before being appointed parish priest of Wellington where he served until 2002 when he again undertook higher studies in France, obtaining a Licentiate in Liturgical and Sacramental Theology from Institut Catholique de Paris.
He returned to the Diocese of Bathurst in 2003 and served six years as parish priest of Blayney, before being appointed Diocesan Administrator following the retirement of Bishop Patrick Dougherty in November 2008.
When Bishop Michael McKenna was installed in June 2009, Fr O’Regan become Diocesan Chancellor and in 2010-14 was Dean of the Cathedral and was appointed Vicar General in 2012.
Fr O’Regan was a member of the National Liturgical Council and the diocesan coordinator for the ongoing formation of priests and permanent deacons.
He was appointed ninth Bishop of Sale by Pope Francis on December 4 2014, the 51st anniversary of the declaration of Sacrosanctum concilium, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy.
On 19 March 2020, Pope Francis announced that he had translated Bishop O’Regan to the Archdiocese of Adelaide as its ninth Archbishop.
His installation took place in St Francis Xavier's Cathedral on Monday May 25.
Archbishop O’Regan’s interests are pastoral liturgy and the theology of the Eucharist, and his love of music and singing voice are well-known. He has also been involved in adult education formation, lecturing in religious education at the Charles Sturt University’s Bathurst and Dubbo campuses, and at the Catholic Institute of Sydney.

Finally, we are continuing to have our class masses every fortnight, and as the situation of COVID-19 evolves we will continue to keep you updated as to when we will be able to welcome parents and friends back within our celebrations.
Many blessings for the coming term!
Christine Farrugia

SACPSSA Netball Carnival 2020
On Thursday 30th July, 80 students from St Joseph’s Kingswood participated in the annual SACPSSA Netball Carnival at Priceline Stadium, Mile End. Each team played 6 matches on the day against various Catholic Schools across the state and although the teams participated for fun and didn’t keep score, if there was a trophy at the end I’m certain we would have won it!
This year, due to COVID-19, there were some restrictions implemented by SA Health meaning our school could only take a limited number of individuals and students. This meant that unfortunately our year 3 students and some parent helpers as well as spectators had to miss out. Hopefully this will change by next year and we can include everyone.
Thank you to all the teachers that assisted on the day, Mr Bratt, Mr Deverson, Mr Schultz, Mrs Begg and Mrs Bello, our parent helpers Kristie Barrington-Case, Guiliana Davis and Emma Brooke and our Cabra umpires.
SACPSSA Touch Football Carnival- 3rd September
We look forward to the SACPSSA Touch Football Carnival later this term, click here for info and to register your child. Once again the focus of the day is participation, not skill-level.

Even though our numbers were down by a lot in Vacation Care we still had a very entertaining time with the Magic Show, Minecraft Day, Stepping Stones by Move It. The children enjoyed themselves and we had a lot of other activities to keep as busy.
